This all started with an idea to just publish online. It seemed like a simple thing to do, but then I received requests for physical copies.
Then I received an opportunity to be at a book fair, and I don’t think people at a book fair just want to scan a QR code.
Then I found out that the local library has a section for local authors. Another opportunity to share my book that would require a physical form.
So, off to the races on physical books, and what a can of worms this is.
I had to completely rework my book with new page dimensions, and I wanted to have a little visual flair so I had to figure that out as well. I added a background to every page, and each chapter I wanted a little something extra, like a coffee stain, or mouse prints running across the page, or ink spatters.
You have to do things like think about the facing pages and how that will present to the reader. Where does the table of contents go, and where does the preface go?
Then you have to find someone to print the whole thing. I wanted to do hardcover but that was just out of the question, and saddle stitch didn’t fit my vision. If any of these terms are foreign to you, don’t worry, they were to me too.
You have to find a printer who has a decent setup, understands your vision, and has a low-ish cost. The margins on these things is pretty thin I’ve found. I essentially had to double the initial price point I had in my head just to cover the printing costs.
I understand it’s hard for a consumer to swallow a higher price than what they are used to for printed books, but hopefully consumers will understand small run prints will always cost a little more.
The books are still a little way out, but I’m looking forward to holding a copy in my hand.
